Most of Air India’s newer North American routes were cut back this year. This one was not. Los Angeles to Delhi launched around the end of 2024 and has held up while services at San Francisco, Chicago and Washington came off the schedule, though we check the live schedule rather than assuming. It is a long flight, north of seventeen hours westbound, and that length changes what matters. We ask about aisle seats and extra legroom before booking, which sounds like a small thing until hour twelve.
When the nonstop is not available on your dates or the fare is wrong, Doha on Qatar Airways and Abu Dhabi on Etihad are the reliable backups, adding roughly two to four hours. Dubai on Emirates, Frankfurt on Lufthansa and Istanbul on Turkish all sell this market too. We book the nonstop first when it is there, because one long flight beats two medium ones for most people, particularly anyone travelling with children or an older parent.
Bangalore is a different problem. LAX to Bangalore has never had a nonstop and it is one of the longest city pairs on the whole corridor. Doha and Abu Dhabi are the usual answers, both hubs run clean connections with sensible layovers. Connecting up to San Francisco to catch an Air India nonstop to Bangalore is no longer a plan, since that nonstop ended in February 2026. Nobody arrives from LAX to Bangalore feeling fresh. What we optimise is the layover, not the theoretical minimum total.
The newest nonstop on the map, and it held
Air India launched LAX to Delhi around the end of 2024 after regulatory approval late that year, and it has proved more durable than several of the airline’s other North American services. In mid-2026 reporting, the suspension list named San Francisco, Chicago O’Hare and Washington Dulles, and did not name Los Angeles. We treat that as encouraging rather than as a guarantee, and we check the live schedule before quoting your dates.
Westbound flying time runs around seventeen hours. Long enough that the small decisions matter: an aisle seat, extra legroom, a meal preference filed in advance. Two minutes on those at booking, or seventeen hours regretting them.
When the nonstop is not the answer
If it is not operating on your dates, or the fare on it does not work, the practical alternatives are Doha on Qatar Airways, Abu Dhabi on Etihad and Dubai on Emirates, with Frankfurt and Istanbul also selling this market. One-stop itineraries run eighteen to twenty hours or more, two to four hours above the nonstop depending on how clean the connection is. Our default is the nonstop when it exists. The exception is when a Gulf routing buys a better fare class, a better baggage allowance, or a schedule that fits a family’s real day.
Bangalore from Los Angeles
One of the longest city pairs on the whole corridor, and it has never had a nonstop. Qatar through Doha and Etihad through Abu Dhabi are the routings we use most, with Emirates through Dubai when you want the larger aircraft on the long leg. Door to door runs roughly twenty to twenty six hours, and the layover is the part we work on.
Baggage and fare class
Air India’s cheapest Economy fare carries one checked bag; Classic and Flex carry two. Qatar’s Economy Lite carries one. Etihad’s Basic fare carries none at all. None of it is hidden, and all of it is easy to miss.
