Seventeen hours is long enough that seat choice stops being a preference and becomes part of the booking. We ask before we issue: aisle or window, extra legroom, whether two people traveling together would rather have the two seat pair than a middle in a block of four. It sounds small. Over seventeen hours it is not, and the seats worth having are gone by the time most people check in.
On the schedule, we treat this nonstop as live but not guaranteed. Los Angeles was not named in the 2026 Air India suspensions that took out San Francisco frequency, Chicago and Washington, a reasonable indication it kept flying, but we could not confirm it on Air India’s own schedule and we will not present an inference as fact. Westbound is around seventeen hours. You may see a figure in the low twenties quoted for the return direction in some places. It does not hold up against how these aircraft actually fly and we would not plan around it.
The alternatives, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Frankfurt and Istanbul, run eighteen to twenty hours or more. Useful when the nonstop is not on your date, and useful for one other traveler: anyone who cannot sit for seventeen hours comfortably. For them a break at a Gulf hub is worth the extra time.

When to book
Peak is October through December, taking in Diwali and the Christmas and New Year holidays, and June through August. January through March is soft, September is soft, and November eases after Diwali clears.
Because this is a single carrier nonstop, peak season tightens faster here than on routes with two or three operators. For a December trip out of Los Angeles, talk to us in the summer.
