San Francisco to Amritsar is a one stop route. Nothing flies nonstop into Amritsar from the US, so the trip runs roughly twenty one to twenty four hours, either through Doha on Qatar or through Delhi with a short domestic hop. Farearc books it on consolidator fares, US and Canada to India. Message us on WhatsApp, call 1-833-330-0574, or ask for a callback, 24/7, whatever your time zone. The Bay Area has one of the largest Punjabi and Sikh communities outside Punjab, so we book this route all year rather than only in wedding season. The first question we get is almost always the wrong one. People ask which routing is cheapest. The better question is which fits the person flying. An elderly parent traveling alone has an easier day through Doha, where the transfer is one terminal. A family of five with eight suitcases is a different problem, and for them the single ticket through Delhi is the answer.
Emirates and Etihad do not fly to Amritsar. That is the fact this route turns on, and it is the one most commonly got wrong by the quotes people bring us. A Dubai or Abu Dhabi itinerary on those carriers typically needs a second connection back through Delhi, so what looks like a one stop is a two stop with a longer day.
On baggage, the trap is the domestic segment. Air India’s domestic allowances, 15kg on Value and 20kg on Classic, sit well below the international ones, so if the Amritsar hop is a separate ticket, your two big suitcases become an excess charge on a one hour flight. We put that leg on the main ticket wherever the airline allows it. When we cannot, we tell you the number before you book.
Which connection
No US airport has nonstop service to Amritsar, so every ticket here is a connection. For Bay Area travelers there are two real choices and one that only looks like one.
Delhi is what we book for families and for anyone elderly. San Francisco to Delhi on Air India or a partner, then a domestic hop of about an hour that runs three times a day on Air India plus IndiGo services. Layovers run two to four hours and the total lands around twenty to twenty four. The last leg being short and frequent is the point: if something slips, the next flight is close.
Doha is what we book for travelers who want one airline and one clean transfer. Qatar is the only Gulf carrier flying nonstop into Amritsar, and the fastest we have found runs close to twenty one and three quarter hours.
Emirates through Dubai and Etihad through Abu Dhabi are not equivalent, whatever a fare comparison implies. Neither serves Amritsar. Only Air India Express and SpiceJet fly Dubai or Abu Dhabi to Amritsar nonstop, so those tickets normally need a second connection, usually doubling back through Delhi.
One thing about the Delhi connection
Air India started Easy Connect at Amritsar on 28 July 2026. Flying out of Amritsar through Delhi, you clear immigration and check your bags straight through at Amritsar, so you are not collecting suitcases and moving between Delhi terminals on the way out. It runs in that direction only. Coming from San Francisco into Amritsar through Delhi, you still do the standard transit and baggage recheck at Delhi. Air India has said the inbound version is coming. We will call it live when we have seen it work on a real booking.
Baggage
The long haul allowance follows the operating carrier. The last leg is where the risk sits.
Air India, international: Economy Value carries one bag of 23kg, Classic and Flex carry two, cabin 8kg plus a personal item.
Qatar Airways: Economy Lite carries one bag of 23kg, Classic and above carry two, cabin 7kg. This is the option that keeps one airline and one rule all the way to Amritsar.
Air India, domestic within India: lower than the international allowance. Economy Value carries 15kg, Classic 20kg and Flex 25kg, and those figures matter if the Delhi to Amritsar leg is ticketed separately.
On one ticket the international allowance carries through. On two tickets it does not, and a family that checked two bags each in San Francisco pays excess at Delhi on a flight of just over an hour.
When to book
Peak runs October through December, covering Diwali and the winter holidays, with North Indian wedding season stacked through the same window and into the new year. Summer is busy with family visits. January through March is soft, and September through November is soft outside specific wedding dates.
If your trip is built around a wedding, tell us the date as soon as you have it. Six months ahead is normal here, because the Delhi to Amritsar hop and the good connection windows go before the transpacific leg does. That affects which routings we can still assemble, not just the price.
Why the routing question matters more than the fare
Amritsar is not a hard place to reach, but it is a place where the wrong itinerary makes a long day much longer. There is no nonstop from the US, so you are choosing between two real options and one that pretends to be an option.
Through Doha, Qatar Airways carries you the whole way, because it is the only Gulf carrier flying nonstop into Amritsar. One airline, one baggage rule, one transfer inside a single terminal, and around twenty two hours of travel.
Through Delhi, you fly the long leg and take a domestic hop of about an hour, with three Air India departures a day plus IndiGo services. The layover usually runs two to four hours and the total is broadly similar. The final leg being short and frequent is the real advantage.
The option that is not an option is Emirates or Etihad. Neither serves Amritsar, so those itineraries add a second connection, usually back through Delhi. On price comparison sites they can look competitive. Counted properly, they are longer than either honest routing, and we will say so even when a customer arrives holding one.
Who is flying decides what we book
The Bay Area’s Punjabi and Sikh community keeps this route busy year round, not just in wedding season, and the bookings fall into patterns we recognise.
Elderly parents traveling alone need the simplest possible transfer and assistance booked in advance, filed at least 48 hours ahead and confirmed with the airline rather than noted on a booking. Doha’s single terminal transfer suits them, and so does Delhi when the layover is long enough not to be rushed.
Families going to a wedding need baggage more than speed. They are carrying clothes, gifts and things for relatives, and the difference between a one bag fare and a two bag fare is far smaller than the excess charge that follows.
Students flying alone with one suitcase should take the fastest itinerary and the cheapest fare that still allows a change, because their dates move more often than they expect.
The baggage rule that catches people at Delhi
The most expensive mistake on this route happens after the long flight is over.
Air India’s domestic allowances inside India are lower than its international ones: 15kg on Value, 20kg on Classic, 25kg on Flex. If the Amritsar hop is on the same ticket as your international flight, the international allowance normally carries through. If it is a separate ticket bought cheaply somewhere else, those domestic numbers are what you are held to, and a family that correctly checked two 23kg bags each in San Francisco gets an excess bill at Delhi for a flight of just over an hour.
We build that leg onto the main ticket wherever the airline allows it. When we cannot, we tell you the likely cost before you book. If you already hold an itinerary from another agency, send it on WhatsApp and we will read it back to you.
Questions people actually ask
Can I fly nonstop to Amritsar from San Francisco?
No. There is no nonstop to Amritsar from any US airport and there never has been, so every itinerary connects at least once. The two routings that genuinely work are Qatar Airways through Doha, one stop on one airline because Qatar flies into Amritsar itself, and a Delhi routing followed by a domestic hop of about an hour. Total travel time is roughly twenty one to twenty four hours either way.
Is Emirates through Dubai a one stop?
Not to Amritsar. Emirates does not serve Amritsar and neither does Etihad, so a Dubai or Abu Dhabi itinerary on those carriers needs a second connection, usually back through Delhi. Only Air India Express and SpiceJet fly nonstop from those hubs into Amritsar. If a quote shows you a Gulf hub and a short journey time, read the segments carefully. Qatar through Doha is the only Gulf routing that reaches Amritsar in a single stop.
Will my bags be checked through to Amritsar?
On one ticket, normally yes, and the international allowance carries onto the Delhi to Amritsar leg. On separate tickets it does not, and Air India's domestic allowances are much lower, 15kg on Value and 20kg on Classic, so you can be charged excess at Delhi for bags you already paid to check in San Francisco.
Which routing should my parents take?
For an elderly traveler flying alone, we usually recommend Doha for the single terminal transfer, or Delhi with a layover long enough to be unhurried and assistance booked through the transfer rather than only at the gates. Delhi has the advantage that the final leg is barely over an hour and runs several times a day, so a missed connection costs hours rather than a day.
How far ahead should I book for a winter wedding?
Six months is normal on this route, not cautious. October through December carries Diwali and the winter holidays, and North Indian wedding season runs through the same window and into the new year. The Delhi to Amritsar hop and the workable connection windows fill before the long haul does, so late booking limits which routings we can build rather than only what they cost. Give us the wedding date and any flexibility around it.
