Doha is our default for one specific reason. Dulles has a nonstop to Doha of nearly thirteen hours, so a Qatar itinerary gives you one long flight and then a four hour hop, rather than two long flights with a transfer in the middle. That suits anyone who wants to sleep on the first leg and arrive able to function. Abu Dhabi and Dubai work fine and we price them when the fare is better, but the structure of the Doha routing is why it wins most weeks.
The second thing we plan around is arrival time. A lot of these trips end with a relative driving to Hyderabad airport, and many Gulf connections land in India in the small hours. We show arrival times next to fares rather than only quoting the cheapest option, because a mid morning arrival is a very different thing to ask of family than a landing at two in the morning, and people rarely think about it until they are booked.
Layovers are the third. Two to three hours at the hub, more for older travelers, and the whole itinerary on one ticket. A fifty five minute connection is not a bargain. It is an exposure, and the recovery from a missed second leg in December costs most of a day.
Which connection
There has never been a nonstop between Washington and Hyderabad, so there is no benchmark to measure a connection against. What varies is the hub and the layover.
Book Doha, and the reason is structural rather than sentimental. Dulles to Doha is a genuine nonstop of about twelve and three quarter hours, and the onward flight to Hyderabad is roughly four. One long flight and one moderate one, rather than two long ones. Abu Dhabi on Etihad and Dubai on Emirates are the other regular options, and Frankfurt on Lufthansa works when a European connection prices better. Around eighteen to twenty hours with a reasonable layover. One aggregator shows an Abu Dhabi itinerary near nineteen hours, which looks like a minimum layover estimate rather than a typical day.
On a trip this length the layover decides how you feel when you land, so we treat it as part of the product rather than as dead time. Two to three hours at a Gulf hub is comfortable. Under an hour and a half is a risk you carry from the moment you leave Washington. With young children or an elderly relative, build in more.

A lot of Hyderabad travel out of Washington is students and families moving belongings rather than short visits, so the allowance matters more than the fare. Excess paid at a counter is the most expensive baggage you can buy.
When to book
Peak is October through December, covering Diwali and the winter holidays, and June through August. January through March is soft, and September through November is soft outside festival dates.
On a route where every ticket is a connecting ticket, booking early buys a better connection as much as a better fare. The civilised layovers and reasonable arrival times sell before the awkward ones. If your dates can move by a day or two, say so: that flexibility improves the connection more than it changes the price.
Why Doha usually wins out of Dulles
When a route has no nonstop, the best itinerary is the one with the best shape, and shape is mostly about where the long flight sits.
Washington has a nonstop to Doha of nearly thirteen hours. A Qatar Airways itinerary to Hyderabad puts almost the whole distance into that first leg, leaves a four hour flight for the second, and asks you to change planes once, roughly two thirds of the way through the journey. For most travelers that is easier than two flights of similar length with a transfer in the middle.
Abu Dhabi on Etihad and Dubai on Emirates are close alternatives and we price them every time, because on any given week one of them may have the better fare or the better departure. Frankfurt on Lufthansa splits the trip differently again.
None of these is dramatically faster than the others. The spread across realistic itineraries is a couple of hours on a journey that runs eighteen to twenty. That is exactly why we do not choose on total time. We choose on the first leg, the layover, and what time you land.
Arrival time is part of the ticket
Something search engines do not weigh, and families always do: what time the flight gets in.
Many Gulf connections into India land between midnight and four in the morning. Traveling alone and taking a taxi, that may not matter much. If your brother is driving from the other side of Hyderabad to collect you, it matters a great deal, and it changes what the trip costs the people meeting you even when it does not change what it costs you.
So we quote arrival times alongside fares and ask which you would rather have. Sometimes the cheap red eye arrival is fine. Often it is not, and a slightly higher fare buys a mid morning landing and a much better first day. It is the sort of thing a person asks and a search box does not.
The same logic applies to layovers. Two to three hours, longer for elderly travelers or heavy luggage, and the whole trip on a single ticket.

Which is the best connection for my parents?
Usually Doha with a layover of two to three hours, because the first leg is a single long flight and the transfer at the hub is manageable. We file wheelchair assistance at least 48 hours ahead, confirm it with the airline, and ask that it covers the transfer at the hub rather than only the departure and arrival airports. What we avoid is any itinerary with a very short connection, because assisted transfers take longer and a missed second leg on a twenty hour trip is a hard recovery.
What time will I land in Hyderabad?
Often in the early hours, depending on which hub you connect through, and it is worth choosing on. We show arrival times alongside fares because someone usually has to collect you, and a two in the morning landing is a much bigger favour to ask than a mid morning one. How many bags do I get?
On Qatar, two bags of 23kg on Classic fares and above, one on Economy Lite. On Etihad, two bags on standard US economy fares and none at all on Basic Economy. Emirates carries two on standard fares and one on the cheapest tier. Since a lot of Hyderabad travel involves students and families moving belongings rather than visiting for a week, tell us the real bag count first, because the fare that carries what you have is usually cheaper than the fare plus excess.
Can I change my ticket if my visa or term dates move?
Usually, with a penalty, and this is the honest cost of a consolidator fare.
