That is when Air India suspended the Dulles to Delhi nonstop, citing fleet retrofit shortfalls and continued airspace closures, and as of the most recent reporting we have it is still suspended with no announced resumption date. Dulles has been named specifically as staying dark even while Air India restores other international capacity. So everyone flying Dulles to Delhi right now is connecting, and we book it that way rather than waiting on an announcement.
Doha on Qatar Airways is usually the first thing we price, because the Dulles to Doha leg is a true nonstop of roughly twelve and a half hours and the onward hop into Delhi or Hyderabad is short. Abu Dhabi on Etihad and Dubai on Emirates both work and are often the better answer on a given week’s schedule. Frankfurt and Istanbul come into play when the Gulf carriers are not pricing well. Total gate to gate on any of these lands somewhere around eighteen to twenty hours.

The advice we give most often on both routes is about layover length. A fifty five minute connection at a big hub looks efficient on a screen and is a bad idea for anyone with checked bags, an older traveller in the party, or a tight arrival at the other end.
