Chicago O'Hare to Delhi is a nonstop of about fifteen hours on United's daily 787-9, with Air India's own nonstop on this pairing suspended for much of 2026, and Gulf one stop routings running nineteen to twenty hours. Farearc books this route on consolidator fares, US and Canada to India. Message us on WhatsApp, call 1-833-330-0574, or ask for a callback, 24/7, whatever your time zone. The Air India suspension is the fact that changes most conversations here. Its Chicago to Delhi nonstop was paused from 1 June through October 2026, and Chicago was named alongside Washington Dulles as staying suspended while other Air India routes came back, so we do not build plans around its return. When people ask us to hold out for it, we tell them what is actually on the schedule.
Winter is the other thing we plan around, in a way we do not for warmer origins. From December through February we build longer connections on Gulf itineraries out of O’Hare, because de-icing and ground holds turn a legal ninety minute connection at Doha into a missed one, and a missed connection on a peak season ticket is not a small problem. Three hours minimum. If someone insists on the tightest itinerary in January, we will book it, and say plainly what we think of it first.
United’s India fares are the recurring surprise. Frequent United flyers who get a generous allowance on Europe routes assume the same applies to Delhi. It does not. We check the allowance against the specific fare, and when the gap between fare classes is smaller than the bag fee, we move you up a class and say why.
Nonstop or one stop
Book United and be done with it, especially between December and February. UA898 and UA899 fly daily on the 787-9, scheduled a little over fifteen hours. Air India flies this pairing in a normal year, but its own ORD to Delhi nonstop was paused from June through October 2026, so for most of the year United carried the route alone.
The one stop alternatives all land in a similar band. Etihad through Abu Dhabi is usually quickest at just under nineteen hours, Emirates through Dubai and Qatar through Doha sit near nineteen and a half, and Lufthansa through Frankfurt splits the trip differently with a shorter first leg. Three and a half to five hours added over the nonstop.
Chicago weather is why we keep pushing the nonstop. A tight Gulf connection built on an on time O’Hare departure in January is optimistic. In a soft month with flexible dates, the connection saves real money and the extra hours are only hours. In December and January, take the aircraft that does not require anything else to go right.
Baggage
United’s India fares do not carry United’s usual international allowance, and that is the thing most people on this route get wrong.
United: most of its international routes include a generous checked allowance, but the India fares have carried a reduced one, typically one free bag with the second paid, and Basic Economy to India includes none at all. Confirm the current fee at booking.
Air India, on one stop or JFK routed itineraries: Economy Value carries one bag of 23kg, Classic and Flex carry two, cabin 8kg plus a personal item.
Qatar Airways: Economy Lite carries one bag of 23kg, other Economy fares two, cabin 7kg.
Etihad: standard Economy carries two bags of 23kg, Basic Economy carries none.
On this route the fare that looks cheapest is frequently the one that carries the least.
When to book
Peak is Diwali in October or November, the run from 10 December through New Year, and June through August. September, February and March are the soft months, and they are properly soft here because the daily nonstop keeps capacity in the market year round.
For December travel, message us in the summer. That window prices up early, and Chicago’s weather makes people reluctant to give up a nonstop seat once they hold one. For September or February, take your time. We do not run countdowns and we do not tell you how many seats are left.
What the Air India suspension means for Chicago travelers
Air India flies Chicago to Delhi in a normal year. In 2026 it did not, for most of the year. The route was paused from 1 June through October as part of a wider cut across several North American services, driven by fuel costs and airspace routing, and Chicago was named alongside Washington Dulles as staying suspended even as other routes returned.
Nonstop capacity between Chicago and Delhi is thinner than it looks on a route map, so peak season seats go earlier. A lot of published information about this route, including older coverage announcing Air India’s service, describes a schedule that was not operating.
We are not going to tell you the nonstop is coming back, because we do not know. We will check the live schedule for your specific dates, price United, price the Gulf hubs, and price a JFK connection for Air India if that turns out to be the better ticket.
Chicago winter, and why we build longer connections
Every origin has a quirk that experienced agents book around. Chicago’s is weather. Between December and February, O’Hare departures are delayed by snow, ground holds and de-icing queues often enough that it changes what a safe itinerary looks like.
An airline’s minimum connection time at Doha or Abu Dhabi assumes the inbound flight arrives roughly on time. In a Chicago January that is an assumption rather than a fact. So on winter travel we build three hours or more at the hub, and we would rather quote a slightly longer trip than a slightly cheaper one that fails on the day.
The other winter rule is to keep the whole trip on one ticket. When a delay causes a misconnection on a single ticket, the airline rebooks you at its cost. When the same thing happens across two separately bought tickets, the second one is simply gone and you buy a new fare at the airport, in peak season, at the counter. That is the worst place in the world to buy a ticket.
What we ask before we quote
Nothing on this site holds a seat or takes payment.
Send the dates or a range, the travelers and their ages, names as printed on passports, your bag count, any wheelchair or meal requirements, and the final Indian city if it is not Delhi. If you are traveling for a wedding, a funeral or a visa appointment, say so. It shapes the fare class we recommend, because a trip that cannot move needs different rules from one that can.
Farearc is founder led by Anuj Kaushik, and the reservations desk in Chandigarh is why the answer comes at whatever hour you send the message.
Questions people actually ask
Is Air India flying Chicago to Delhi again?
It was suspended from June through October 2026 and Chicago was specifically named as remaining suspended while other Air India routes came back online, so do not assume it has returned. United flies the nonstop daily on the 787-9 regardless. We check the live schedule for your travel dates before quoting, and the fare table on this page carries what is current.
How many bags does United give me to India?
Fewer than on United's other long haul routes. Its India fares have carried a reduced allowance, generally one free checked bag with the second paid, and Basic Economy to India includes no free bag at all. This catches out regular United flyers who are used to a different allowance on Europe routes. Confirm the fee against your specific fare at booking, and tell us your bag count first so we quote a fare that fits what you are carrying.
How long should my layover be in winter?
Longer than the minimum. From December through February, O'Hare departures get delayed by weather and de-icing often enough that a ninety minute connection at Doha or Abu Dhabi is a real risk, and rebooking in peak season is slow. We generally build three hours or more into winter itineraries. If the whole trip is on one ticket the airline is responsible for rebooking you, which is another reason we avoid split tickets on this route.
Should I connect through JFK for Air India?
Only when it clearly wins on fare or schedule, and we will tell you when it does not. Adding a domestic leg to a long haul means a second boarding, a second chance to misconnect, and sometimes a separate baggage rule. When Air India's Chicago nonstop is not running, the JFK routing is legitimate and we price it, but for most travelers United's daily Chicago nonstop or a Gulf one stop is the simpler day.
Can my parents get assistance at both ends?
Yes. We file wheelchair and mobility assistance when the ticket is issued, at least 48 hours ahead, and confirm it with the airline rather than leaving a note on the booking. On a nonstop there are two handoffs, at Chicago and at Delhi. On a one stop there is a third at the hub, which is where these things most often slip, so for an elderly traveler flying alone we usually recommend the nonstop even at a higher fare.
