Two nonstop carriers on one pairing changed how we book it. We used to take whatever Air India had. Now we check both every week, because Air India’s US frequency was adjusted repeatedly through 2026 and American’s 787 here is new enough that we confirm it is still on the schedule before quoting anything as evergreen.
The flight time is softer than it looks. Published figures land anywhere between fourteen and a half and seventeen and a quarter hours depending on direction. We quote fifteen and a half and tell you to write off the arrival day.
The mistake we correct most often is a fare class mismatch. Somebody books the cheapest Air India economy fare, packs for a two month visit, and finds at JFK that Value carries one bag rather than two. Excess at the counter costs more than Classic would have, so we ask how many bags before we ask about seats. American runs the other way: its India fares include a checked bag even on Basic Economy for tickets issued from 23 April 2026, which is not how its Basic Economy behaves anywhere else.
Booking for a parent flying alone, ask us to file the wheelchair request at ticketing. A nonstop has two handoffs. A Gulf connection has three, and the third one is where it slips.
Nonstop or one stop
Take the nonstop. Air India runs it as AI101 and AI102 on the A350, American added a 787-9 on the same pairing, and on a good week you are picking on departure time rather than on routing.
That holds only while both are actually flying. Air India’s US schedule moved several times through 2026 and American’s service here is recent, so check the fare table on this page against your dates before you treat either as given.
If the nonstop is not on your day, ask for Etihad through Abu Dhabi. A little over eighteen hours end to end, and as many as six itineraries a day, which is what makes it the one we reach for first. Qatar through Doha is close behind. Emirates through Dubai runs nearer twenty. Turkish, Lufthansa and the London carriers all sell this route and every one of them adds more, up to nine hours over a nonstop once a long layover is counted. In February or September the connection can undercut the nonstop by enough to buy your patience. In Diwali and December weeks it usually cannot.
Baggage
Fare class decides this, not the airline’s reputation.
Air India: the lowest Economy fare, sold as Value, carries one checked bag of 23kg. Classic and Flex carry two. Cabin allowance is 8kg plus a personal item.
American Airlines: one free checked bag to India on tickets issued from 23 April 2026, Basic Economy included. Unusual for a basic fare, and worth weighing against a cheap Air India Value fare.
Qatar Airways: Economy Lite carries one bag, every other Economy fare two, cabin 7kg.
Etihad: standard Economy carries two bags of 23kg. Basic Economy carries none at all, which is the most common surprise we see on Gulf itineraries out of New York.
Match the bag count to the fare before you book, not at the counter.
When to book
Diwali in October or November. Mid December into the first week of January. June through August, when school is out and nobody’s dates are flexible. In those weeks the fare stops responding to anything you do.
February, March and September are soft, and there is a short soft window in early November once Diwali clears. For a Diwali trip we would rather hear from you in July than in September. If your dates can move by a few days, send the range and we will price the range. We do not run countdowns. The fare moves because of the calendar, and the calendar is public.
What a consolidator fare on this route actually gets you
A consolidator fare is a seat sold through a contract between an agency and an airline rather than through the airline’s public website. On a long haul like this one, those contracts commonly produce fares well below published prices. That is the reason to call us.
The catch is flexibility. A consolidator fare sits in a stricter booking class, so a date change costs an airline penalty plus any fare difference, usually a higher penalty than a published ticket carries. Cancelling returns less than you expect, and on the cheapest classes close to nothing. Mileage accrual is set by the airline, not by us.
For most people flying JFK to Delhi on fixed dates to see family, that is a trade worth making. If your dates hang on a visa appointment, a court date or an employer’s approval, the maths changes. Ask us what the flexible version of the same trip costs. Sometimes the gap is small enough that you should simply buy it.
Booking for a parent who is flying alone
A large share of the calls we take on New York to Delhi are adult children booking for a parent, and the questions are never about price first. Can she get a wheelchair. Will someone meet her at the gate. What happens if she does not understand an announcement.
On the nonstop the answers are short. One wheelchair request at JFK, one at Delhi, bags checked through, no transfer to manage. We file the request when the ticket is issued and confirm it with the airline rather than assuming a note on the booking is enough. Is the nonstop actually flying on my dates?
We check that per date rather than per route. Air India adjusted its US flying repeatedly through 2026 and American's JFK to Delhi service is recent, so we look at live schedules for the exact days you want before quoting. If the nonstop is not there, we will say so and price Abu Dhabi or Doha instead. We will not sell you a connection while implying it is a nonstop.
How many bags do I get, really?
It depends on the fare class, not the airline. Air India's cheapest economy fare gives you one checked bag of 23kg, Classic and Flex give you two. American gives you one on India routes, Basic Economy included, on tickets issued from 23 April 2026. Etihad's Basic Economy gives you none. Tell us how much you are carrying before we book, because excess at the counter is always the expensive way to solve this.
Can my mother get a wheelchair at both ends?
Yes, and we file it when the ticket is issued rather than leaving it to the airport. We request assistance at least 48 hours ahead and confirm it against the booking with the airline. On the nonstop it is one request at JFK and one at Delhi. On a one stop there is a third handoff at the hub, and that is the one that occasionally goes wrong, which is why we push the nonstop for an elderly traveler flying alone.
Can I change the ticket if my visa is late?
Sometimes, and this is where a consolidator fare costs you something. These fares are cheaper than the airline's own site because the change and cancellation rules are stricter. A change means an airline penalty plus a fare difference, and on the cheapest classes a cancellation leaves you with very little. Is the Gulf connection worth it to save money?
Depends who is flying and for how long. Adding two and a half to nine hours to a fifteen hour trip eats a day at each end, which is nothing on a six week family visit and a lot on a fortnight. For a solo traveler with a tight return, an elderly parent, or anyone flying with a toddler, we lean nonstop and say so even when the connection is cheaper.
