Newark to Delhi is one of the steadiest nonstops between North America and India, about fifteen hours in the air on United's daily 787-9, with Gulf and European one stop routings adding three to eight hours. Farearc books this route on consolidator fares, US and Canada to India. Message us on WhatsApp, call 1-833-330-0574, or ask for a callback, 24/7, whatever your time zone. From $854 roundtrip in economy, updated September 25, 2026.
We lean on Newark for a lot of New York area customers, and it is not loyalty to United. It is that this schedule held while others moved. Air India’s own Newark to Delhi nonstop was suspended through part of 2026 in the same round of cuts that hit Chicago and Washington, and UA082 carried the route through it. If Air India is back on your dates we will price both. We check rather than assume, because the assumption has been wrong twice this year.
The mistake that costs our customers most money here is United Basic Economy. On United’s India fares it does not include a checked bag, and the fee applies each way. People book it because it is the cheapest line on a comparison screen, pay at Newark, then pay again at Delhi on the return. If you are carrying anything at all, and almost everyone on this route is, the main cabin fare is usually the cheaper ticket by the time you land.
One more thing about Newark itself. The international departure gates are a long walk from the security checkpoint, so for anyone with limited mobility we file assistance at ticketing rather than leaving it to be requested at the gate.
Nonstop or one stop
Book the nonstop. United flies UA082 and UA083 daily on the 787-9, and through the 2026 schedule changes that pulled several Air India US services off the board, this one kept running. Air India normally flies the pairing too, though that service was suspended for part of 2026, so on any given date there may be one nonstop carrier or two. Fifteen hours, a little less eastbound in winter when the winds help.
One stop options are plentiful. Qatar through Doha and Etihad through Abu Dhabi make the tightest connections, Emirates through Dubai is close, and Turkish, Lufthansa and the London carriers all sell it. Expect three to eight extra hours depending on hub and layover.
Take a connection only for a reason you can name: the nonstop’s departure time genuinely does not work, or you are going for a month and a lost half day is nothing, or the February gap in fares is wide enough to be worth it. With an infant, an elderly parent, or a same week visa, pay for the nonstop and stop thinking about it.
Baggage
United’s India fares behave differently from United’s other international fares, and that is the whole story here.
United main cabin: one free checked bag on most international routes, up to 23kg and 62 linear inches.
United Basic Economy to India: no free checked bag. United charges for the first bag each way on these fares, and the charge has changed more than once, so confirm it at booking.
Air India, when it is operating this route: the lowest Economy fare carries one bag of 23kg, Classic and Flex carry two, cabin 8kg plus a personal item.
Qatar, Etihad and Emirates: standard Economy generally carries two bags of 23kg, the cheapest tier one, and Etihad’s Basic Economy none.
Basic Economy is the trap. Same flight, same seat, and then the bag costs you at the counter.
When to book
Peak is Diwali in October or November, mid December through the first week of January, and June through August. February, March, September and early November are soft, and on this pairing they are soft by a wide margin, because a daily nonstop puts real capacity into the market.
That daily United flight is why Newark to Delhi is more forgiving than most India routes. There is a seat most days. What changes is the price, and it starts climbing for Diwali in late summer. In February or September you have room, and we will say so when waiting costs you nothing.
Why this route holds up when others move
Between 2025 and 2026, Air India adjusted a great deal of its North American flying. Chicago and Washington lost their nonstops to Delhi for extended periods, San Francisco lost frequency, and the Newark and JFK schedules moved around. Through all of it, United kept flying Newark to Delhi daily on the 787-9.
That matters more than it sounds. A daily flight means there is almost always a seat on the day you want, and it means that when something goes wrong, a delay, a cancellation, a missed onward connection, there is another aircraft tomorrow rather than in three days.
Air India’s own Newark to Delhi nonstop returns and disappears with the airline’s fleet and routing situation. When it is flying we price it alongside United, because it sometimes wins on fare and often wins on baggage allowance. When it is not, we say so rather than listing it as an option that quietly turns into a connection at checkout.
The part nobody else discloses
Our fares are consolidator fares. They come from contracts between the agency and the airline rather than from the airline’s public website, and on a long haul like this one they are usually cheaper, sometimes substantially. Every agency in this business sells them. Almost nobody explains what you give up.
You give up flexibility. The booking class is stricter, so a date change carries an airline penalty on top of any fare difference. A cancellation returns less than a published fare would, and on the lowest classes very little. Mileage accrual is set by the airline and can be reduced or unavailable entirely, so if status or miles are the point of the trip, tell us before we issue.
For most travelers on Newark to Delhi, going to see family on dates that are not moving, that is a good trade and it is why the fare is worth having. For someone whose trip hangs on a visa interview or an employer’s sign off, it can be a bad one.
What to send us, and what happens next
Nothing on this page checks availability, holds a seat, or takes a payment. That is deliberate.
Send your dates or a range, the travelers and their ages, names as printed on the passports, your bag count, any assistance or meal requirements, and the final Indian city if it is not Delhi. We come back with the routing, the fare, and the rules attached, including what a change would cost. Farearc is founder led by Anuj Kaushik, with the reservations desk in Chandigarh, which is how we cover 24/7 without pretending to keep office hours in one time zone.
Questions people actually ask
Is Newark to Delhi flying every day?
United operates this nonstop daily on the 787-9 and it ran through the 2026 schedule disruption that removed several Air India US services. Air India also normally flies the pairing, but that service was suspended for part of 2026, so on some dates there is one nonstop carrier and on others two. We check the live schedule for your specific dates, and the fare table on this page carries what is current rather than what was true last quarter.
Does Basic Economy include a bag to India?
No. On United's India route fares, Basic Economy does not include a free checked bag, and you pay for the first bag in each direction. The main cabin fare includes one bag up to 23kg. Because the fee applies both ways, the cheaper looking fare is often the more expensive trip once you land. Tell us your bag count first and we will quote the fare that fits it.
Can my father get wheelchair help at Newark and Delhi?
Yes, and we file it when we issue the ticket rather than leaving it to the airport. We request assistance at least 48 hours ahead and confirm it with the airline against the booking. Newark's international departure gates are a long walk from security, so the request matters even for someone who walks well normally. At Delhi, assistance meets the aircraft, and if there is an onward domestic flight we ask for it to be arranged through to that gate.
Should I take the cheaper Gulf connection?
Depends on the trip. Adding three to eight hours to a fifteen hour flight costs you most of a day at one end, which is fine on a five week family visit and expensive on a one week trip. We recommend the nonstop for anyone traveling with an infant, an elderly parent, or on tight paperwork, and we are happy to price both so you can see the actual gap rather than guessing at it.
I am connecting to Lucknow, can that go on one ticket?
Usually yes, and it is worth asking for. On one ticket your bags are checked through to the final city, your international allowance normally carries onto the domestic leg, and if the long haul is late the airline rebooks you. On separate tickets you collect at Delhi, recheck, and can be charged domestic excess for bags you already checked at Newark.
