Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines splits the US and Canada to India journey at Istanbul, with a long transatlantic leg and a second leg into Delhi of around six hours. Farearc books Turkish on consolidator fares in Economy and Business. Its checked allowance to India is either one bag or two depending on route and fare, so the ticket governs. What we can do on this carrier

Two things make Turkish worth pricing, and neither is the cabin. The North American network is unusually broad, reaching cities with no nonstop to India at all. And Istanbul sits far enough east that the second leg is about six hours, so the trip breaks into one long flight and one moderate one rather than two long ones.

We hold consolidator inventory in Economy and, on many routes, in Business. After ticketing we can add baggage, request seats, file meals, file assistance covering the Istanbul transfer, and reissue where the fare allows. What we always check on Turkish is the baggage actually attached to the fare, because it is not a fixed figure here. Istanbul is large enough to rebook a misconnection the same day, though the queue there runs longer than at a smaller hub.

Cabins and baggage

Economy and Business across the long-haul fleet. No separate premium economy on most of these routes, so from Economy the next step is Business.

Checked baggage on tickets touching the US is either one bag at 23kg or two bags at 23kg each, depending on the route and the fare, and it is shown on the ticket rather than set by a universal rule. Business carries two bags at 32kg each. Because this varies for real, we do not quote a figure from memory. We confirm the allowance attached to your fare before ticketing and tell you what it says.

Cabin baggage is one piece at 8kg, 55 by 40 by 23cm, plus a personal item up to 4kg, a little more generous than the Gulf carriers.

On multi airline itineraries touching the US, the Most Significant Carrier rule under Department of Transportation order means baggage for the whole journey follows one airline rather than changing leg by leg. Read the ticket, and ask us if it does not match what a website told you.

Assistance and special services

The request goes in at least forty eight hours before departure, coded to the need: WCHR for airport distances, WCHS for someone who cannot manage steps, WCHC for someone who has to be taken to their seat. Make sure it covers the Istanbul transfer and not only the departure and arrival airports.

Istanbul is the consideration on this carrier. It is a very large airport and the walks between gates run longer than at Doha or Abu Dhabi, sometimes considerably. That is workable with assistance booked properly and a realistic layover. It is not the place to book a minimum connection for an elderly traveller flying alone, because the gap between a schedule that allows fifty five minutes and a terminal that needs twenty five of them on foot leaves nothing for a late arrival. We build extra ground time into Istanbul itineraries as a matter of course, and we confirm the assistance booking back to you rather than assuming it was accepted.

On flights to and from the US the Air Carrier Access Act applies to Turkish as to any carrier serving the US: assistance from the terminal entrance through security to the seat at no charge, across connections included, nobody who is not independently mobile left unattended beyond thirty minutes, and a Complaints Resolution Official available at no cost when something fails. Ask for one by name at the airport. Self identify at check-in on the day.

Six hours from Istanbul to Delhi

That number is the argument for Turkish. The trip breaks into one long flight and one moderate one, rather than two long ones either side of a hub, and most travellers find that easier than it looks on paper. Turkish also flies from North American cities with no nonstop to India at all, which makes it a real alternative when the Gulf carriers do not fit your dates.

No separate premium economy cabin on most of these routes, though. From Economy, the next thing you can buy is Business.

Istanbul is a long airport

The walking distances between gates are substantial, longer than Doha or Abu Dhabi. A short connection has less margin than the same number of minutes at a compact hub. It works well with a realistic layover. It is the wrong place for a minimum connection, particularly with checked bags or an elderly passenger.

Transit rules before you book

Passengers staying inside the international transit area on a single through ticket, with bags checked through and no terminal change requiring passport control, generally do not need a Turkish transit visa. Passengers who leave the transit zone, collect bags, or pass through immigration generally do, and Indian passport holders are not visa exempt for entry into Turkey. Getting this wrong means being denied boarding, so tell us the passport each traveller carries and the exact routing, and we will point you at the official guidance before anything is ticketed.

Send dates, passenger names as printed in the passports, bag count and any assistance needs on WhatsApp, or call 1-833-330-0574 for the US and Canada. We answer 24/7, whatever your time zone.

Questions people actually ask

How many checked bags do I get on Turkish Airlines to India?

It depends on the route and fare. On tickets touching the US the Economy allowance is either one bag at 23kg or two at 23kg each, shown on the ticket rather than set by a universal rule. Business carries two at 32kg. We confirm the allowance attached to your fare before ticketing.

Do I need a transit visa to change planes in Istanbul?

Generally not if you stay inside the international transit area on a single through ticket with bags checked through. If you leave the transit zone, collect bags, or change terminals in a way that requires passport control, a visa is generally required, and Indian passport holders are not visa exempt for entry into Turkey. Tell us your passport and routing before booking.

How long is the Istanbul to Delhi leg?

About six hours, and that is much of why Turkish works here. The journey splits into a long transatlantic leg and a moderate second one instead of two long flights. From Newark the run to Istanbul is near nine and a half to ten hours.

Is Istanbul a difficult airport to connect through?

It is large, and the walking distances between gates are the thing to plan for. With assistance booked in advance and a realistic layover it works well. What we avoid is a minimum connection there, especially for older travellers, because there is less margin than the schedule suggests.

Manage a booking

Your booking lives in the airline's own system, so the Turkish Airlines manage-booking page is the place to check it. If you booked with us and something needs changing, message us and we will handle it rather than leaving you to a form.
