Lufthansa

Frankfurt and Munich are Lufthansa's two doors into India from North America. Farearc books Lufthansa on consolidator fares from the US and Canada to India, in Economy, Premium Economy, Business and, on some aircraft, First. Its Economy checked allowance to India is one bag, half what most Gulf carriers give. Message us on WhatsApp, or call 1-833-330-0574.

What we can do on this carrier

Frankfurt often produces the shortest total journey time into Mumbai from Chicago, and both German hubs feed Indian destinations. Our consolidator inventory covers Economy and Premium Economy, and on many routes Business. Its Premium Economy is a real separate cabin, useful here because several competitors jump straight from Economy to Business with nothing in between.

After ticketing we can add baggage, request seats, file meals, file assistance for the European transfer as well as both ends, and reissue where the fare allows. One rule is worth understanding on any European routing. Under a Department of Transportation rule, baggage across an itinerary touching the US follows the Most Significant Carrier, usually the airline listed first on the ticket, rather than the airline flying each leg. The allowance printed on your ticket governs, and we read that rather than the operating carrier’s website.

Cabins and baggage

Economy, Premium Economy and Business across the long-haul fleet, with First on a limited number of aircraft. Premium Economy is a real cabin with a wider seat and its own service, not extra legroom sold up.

Baggage is the honest weakness. The general free Economy allowance is one checked bag at 23kg, maximum dimensions 158cm, which is half what several Gulf carriers give on their standard Economy fares to India. On a corridor where families move two large bags each way, that difference is frequently larger in real money than the fare gap that made the European routing look attractive in the first place.

Carry-on is one bag at 8kg, 55 by 40 by 23cm, plus a personal item, a little more generous than the 7kg the Gulf carriers apply.

Premium Economy, Business and First all carry more checked baggage than Economy. Travelling heavy on a modest fare difference, buying up a cabin sometimes costs less than buying the extra bags, and we do that arithmetic before you reach a counter.

Assistance and special services

Forty eight hours ahead, correct code, WCHR, WCHS or WCHC, and covering the Frankfurt or Munich transfer as well as both ends of the trip. That is the whole of the paperwork.

Frankfurt is the part to plan for. It is large and spread out, the walk between concourses is long, and a connection there covers more ground than a Gulf hub transfer does. That is manageable with assistance booked properly and a realistic layover, and it is the single place on a European routing where a tight connection comes apart. We book longer connections at Frankfurt than at Doha or Abu Dhabi as a matter of policy, more again for anyone travelling alone. Munich is an easier transfer and worth asking about when the schedule allows it.

On flights to and from the US the Air Carrier Access Act applies to Lufthansa as it applies to a US carrier: free assistance from the terminal entrance through security to the seat, across connections included, and a Complaints Resolution Official available when it fails. Ask for one by name at the airport rather than filing a complaint afterwards. On the European legs, EU passenger rights also provide for airport assistance when it has been requested in advance. Self identify to staff on the day.

Transit through a European hub can carry visa requirements that depend on your passport and your exact routing. Being wrong about that means being denied boarding, so ask us before you book rather than at the gate.

One checked bag, and what that costs

Lufthansa’s Economy allowance to India is one bag at 23kg. Most Gulf carriers give two on their standard Economy fares over the same corridor. For a family travelling with gifts in both directions, the price of the second bag can exceed the fare saving that made the European routing attractive in the first place. This is not a criticism of the airline. It is a piece versus weight difference European carriers apply across the board, and it is the first thing we check before recommending a European routing at all.

What Lufthansa is good at

Total journey time on certain city pairs, and cabin choice. Frankfurt frequently produces the shortest overall time on Chicago to Mumbai. Premium Economy is a real cabin rather than extra legroom, on a corridor where several competitors offer nothing between Economy and Business. Schedules are dense, so when a specific day and departure time is fixed by something on the ground, Lufthansa often has it.

Frankfurt or Munich

Frankfurt is big, spread out, and the concourse walks are long. A short connection there carries more risk than the same number of minutes at a compact hub. Munich is easier and worth asking about when the schedule allows.

Booking it

Dates, passenger names exactly as printed in the passports, and your real bag count, which on Lufthansa changes the recommendation more than on most carriers. We compare Economy plus a paid bag against Premium Economy and build a Frankfurt connection with margin in it. Phone 1-833-330-0574 for the US and Canada, 24/7, whatever your time zone.

Questions people actually ask

How many bags do I get on Lufthansa to India?

Economy includes one checked bag at 23kg, maximum 158cm in total dimensions, plus a carry-on at 8kg and a personal item. That is half what most Gulf carriers give on their standard Economy fares to India. Premium Economy and Business carry more. Tell us your bag count and we will do the comparison.

Is Lufthansa's Premium Economy worth it on this route?

Often, and for a reason beyond the seat: it carries more checked baggage than Economy. On a corridor where a second bag is normal, the cabin sometimes costs little more than the bag would, and it buys you a better fourteen hours as well. We price both against each other.

How long should my Frankfurt connection be?

Longer than the published minimum. Frankfurt is large and spread out, with real distances between concourses, so a tight connection has less margin there than the same number of minutes at a Gulf hub. We build extra ground time in, more again if anyone is using wheelchair assistance. Munich is easier.

Whose baggage rules apply if part of my trip is on a partner airline?

Under a Department of Transportation rule, baggage on an itinerary touching the US follows the Most Significant Carrier, usually the airline listed first on the ticket, rather than the operating carrier of each leg. The allowance printed on your own ticket governs. We check that at booking rather than relying on whichever airline's website you happened to read.

Manage a booking

Your booking lives in the airline's own system, so the Lufthansa manage-booking page is the place to check it. If you booked with us and something needs changing, message us and we will handle it rather than leaving you to a form.
