What we can do on this carrier
Etihad earns its place here by being quick into southern and western India, and we hold consolidator inventory in the Economy fare families and, on many routes, in Business. Abu Dhabi is the fastest single stop into Hyderabad from Chicago and Washington, and among the fastest into Bangalore and Mumbai from Toronto, with connections frequently under two hours instead of the three or four a slower hub imposes.
After ticketing we can add checked baggage, request seats, file meals, file assistance covering the Abu Dhabi transfer, and reissue where the fare allows. What we will not do is quietly put you in the Basic fare, because on Etihad that fare carries no free checked bag at all. When a journey goes wrong, Etihad rebooks from Abu Dhabi and its transfer desk moves quickly, helped by the hub being smaller than Dubai.
Cabins and baggage
Economy and Business on this corridor, with a first class product on a small part of the fleet. Economy Space is extra legroom inside the Economy cabin, not a separate cabin.
The Basic Economy fare includes no free checked bag. Read that twice. Every other Economy fare on flights beginning or ending in the US carries two bags at 23kg each, a strong allowance by the standards of this corridor. The gap between Basic and the fare directly above it is therefore not a small one, and the headline comparison is meaningless until a bag is added back in.
Fares sold in India run on weight rather than pieces, and the Basic fare there carries no free checked allowance either. A ticket bought in India for the return direction is measured differently from the one you bought in North America.
Cabin baggage in Economy is one bag at 7kg. Our research indicates Etihad does not add a separate personal item in Economy the way some competitors do. We could not confirm that against Etihad’s own live page, so treat it as likely rather than settled and pack the return conservatively.
Assistance and special services
File assistance at least forty eight hours before departure with the right code. WCHR for someone who needs help with airport distances. WCHS for someone who cannot manage steps. WCHC for someone who needs taking to their seat. The request must cover the Abu Dhabi transfer as well as the departure and arrival airports. A request logged only for the origin does not follow a passenger across a hub, and nobody at Abu Dhabi will know to look for them.
Abu Dhabi is smaller than Dubai and its newer terminal is well laid out, which makes it a manageable transfer for a passenger using a wheelchair. The practical risk on Etihad is the inverse of the usual one. Because Abu Dhabi connections are short, sometimes under two hours, a transfer that looks efficient on the schedule leaves almost nothing if the assistance team is running behind on the previous arrival. For anyone travelling with assistance we book a longer connection than the fastest on offer. Two hours lost in a lounge beats a day lost in a hotel.
On flights to and from the US the Air Carrier Access Act applies to Etihad exactly as it applies to a US carrier: assistance from the terminal entrance through to the seat at no charge, across connections included, nobody who is not independently mobile left unattended beyond thirty minutes, and a Complaints Resolution Official available when something fails. Ask for the CRO by name at the airport. Self identify at check-in, because the note on the booking does not tell anyone who you are. Travellers with their own battery powered wheelchair should register the battery type in advance and arrive an hour before the normal cutoff.
Fast into Hyderabad, Bangalore and Mumbai
Speed is what Etihad sells here. Abu Dhabi is the fastest single stop from Chicago and Washington into Hyderabad, and among the fastest from Toronto into Bangalore and Mumbai, with layovers frequently under two hours. The hub is smaller and calmer than Dubai and its newer terminal is easy to move through, which is worth real money to anyone travelling with an older parent.
The Basic fare has no bag
None. Not one paid bag included, not a smaller allowance, nothing. On a route where almost nobody travels without a suitcase, that is the fare most likely to be compared against other airlines’ fares that do include a bag, and the comparison is not like for like. We always price the fare above it alongside.
Etihad also does not serve Amritsar, and neither does Emirates. Only Air India Express and SpiceJet fly the Gulf into Amritsar nonstop, so an Abu Dhabi routing to Punjab usually means a second connection back through Delhi.
A short connection is a risk, not a prize
For a fit adult, a ninety minute Abu Dhabi transfer is one of the more pleasant things on this corridor. For anyone using wheelchair assistance it is the opposite. The assistance team is working the previous arrival, your inbound is twenty minutes late, and the margin that made the itinerary attractive is gone.
