Cabins and baggage

That tiering is steeper than most carriers on this corridor and it is the first thing we check on every Canadian booking. For a family flying to Punjab with gifts in both directions, the tier that includes two bags is frequently cheaper overall than Basic plus paid bags. The headline comparison never shows that.
Past Delhi, Air Canada has no aircraft of its own onward to Amritsar or most other Indian cities. Continuing means pairing with an Indian carrier, which decides whether your bags check through and whether the international allowance survives onto the domestic leg.
Assistance and special services
File assistance at least forty eight hours before departure with the correct code, WCHR, WCHS or WCHC, covering every airport on the itinerary including Delhi if you connect onward there.
Toronto Pearson is the airport to plan around. Air Canada works out of Terminal 1, and any itinerary involving a change to Terminal 3 means the LINK train and a real fifteen to twenty minutes with bags, which is a different proposition for someone in a wheelchair than it looks like on a schedule. Vancouver is a single terminal and one of the more manageable international departures in North America, which is worth knowing when you are choosing a gateway for a parent flying alone. Montreal is compact and straightforward.
The handoff that needs the most attention is Delhi, because Air Canada does not fly the onward domestic leg. Assistance requested on an Air Canada ticket does not carry to a separately issued Indian domestic segment. Nobody tells you that at Toronto. It surfaces when an eighty year old is sitting at Delhi waiting for a chair that was never ordered, so we file it on both tickets and read the confirmations back to you.
On flights touching the US the Air Carrier Access Act applies. On flights within Canada the Canadian Transportation Agency’s accessibility rules apply. The fare tiers are the trap
On India routes the Basic fare includes no free checked bag, and the step between tiers is steeper than on most carriers here. The cheapest headline fare is frequently the most expensive trip once the bags are counted.
Past Delhi you change airlines
If the trip continues to Amritsar or anywhere else in India, the last leg is on an Indian carrier. That is normal and it works. Three things have to be settled before booking rather than at a counter in Delhi at two in the morning: whether the bags are checked through, whether the international allowance carries onto the domestic segment, and whether assistance has been filed on both tickets.
